Grad School…
is pretty cool. I know that doesn’t really describe anything but that is all I can really say right now. A friend asked me how it was and all I could tell her was that it’s cool. I’m actually doing all the experiments and techniques that I only read about in undergrad. I know that some of my friends did labs but I unfortunately didn’t so all of this is new to me.
In terms of classes the program is a bit weird. I’m enrolled in 4 classes but I have only attended one so far. Now before you start thinking that I’m already ditching classes allow me to explain. One class is Journal Club which meets weekly and is a presentation thing that each student in the program has to do. This class starts next Wednesday. The major class that we are all required to take supposedly doesn’t start until March because the Doctor in charge said so. I don’t really know any other reason why. Hahah. The third class I forgot the exact name but it’s basically me doing research and discussing with my principal investigator (P.I.) and we basically meet everyday to do that anyways. My last class is the class that actually started this week. From what I can gather we’re going to be exposed to all the research methods and techniques (the class is called Research Methods and Techniques) that we can use in our own research.
Today we had to handle mice, just in case we wanted to conduct animal research. I was a bit scurred, not going to lie. I mean. It was a mouse. Stright up. Wtf. But after a few tries I at least got used to grabbing them. There’s a certain way to hold mice so you can inject them with whatever so that they don’t bite you. I can kind of do it. I have a 50% success rate.
Being away from home is going good so far too. I know my mom is probably still getting used to the fact that I’m not there every night and honestly I’m still getting used to fact that she’s not here either. She’s called almost everyday since I’ve been gone to check up on me and tell me good night. She even sent me a picture of her last week that said “Hi son I love you”. =D I’ll be going home this weekend so that will make her happy.
The only things that are annoying I guess are:
- the lamp I bought from IKEA doesn’t light up my room. It barely lights up the desk it’s sitting on. Guess I shouldn’t have bought a black lamp shade
- 2 of my outlets don’t work (should be getting fixed saturday)
- there’s a cricket in our laundry room
- the place is pretty dirty so we need to hire someone to clean it, it’s not uninhabitable but you can tell that it wasn’t cleaned before the previous tenants left, the carpet was cleaned though thank goodness
Again these aren’t big things just annoyances. I really do like the place we have.
Well it’s almost 12, I should probably get ready for bed. I actually think I have a normal sleep schedule now. =D
